Why we don’t post the improv sections

Hi braggers,
Just wanted to post a quick note since we receive so many requests to post the improv sections from our videos.

The short answer is that “improv” is meant to be improvised, not written down. It is based on jazz theory where most songs don’t even have anything besides intro and outtro chord patterns written down; the rest is conceived on the spot in the midst of musical creative awesomeness (can you tell we are major jazz fans?).

Our intent in posting improv sections on our videos is to inspire you to try it yourself. See if you can figure out your own variations on the chords, and spin them your own way. Here are a few ideas:

1. Try changing the order of notes in the left-hand chords. If it is a C major chord with C on the bottom, move it to the top.
2. Try changing a few rhythms in the melody. If all the notes in a measure start on downbeats, try syncopating them by hitting some or all of them on upbeats instead.
3. Move a section up or down an octave the second time through.
4. In between half or whole notes, add some additional notes.

Improvising can give you some of the most fun moments you will have on the keyboard. Give it a try! Here’s Neil improvising a walking bass line in the left hand starting at 1:28.
